The last of the ties has been taken apart, but I did want to share this one. It's one of my favorites, and this and Mickey Mouse are presenting a bit of a problem. You see, I need to make 7 quilts, and there is only one of each of them. Plus, they are larger than the block size I was planning to make.

So there's a bit of a dilemma. Not to worry, I'm sure I'll resolve it... sure. No one said the quilts had to be identical!

Here's my setup for taking apart the ties for my crazy quilt project--sofa with comfy pillows, phone, camera, baggies to hold the ties, the linings, the labels; a trash bag; the remote; a pile of ties, and oh yes my pouch of tools, including my favorite seam ripper. (I call him Jack.)

After working on this till 1:30 this morning, I've barely made a dent in the basketful of ties! However, I've found that some of them are just not going to work very well--apparently they're rayon and they didn't take well to the laundry process! I may use some of them anyway, just for the color and pattern, but even then they're among the uglier fabrics. Oh well--the ugly patches, or the ones that don't seem to work with their neighbors, are going to be t he prime spots for extra buttons and embroidery!

According to the terms of the challenge, I'm supposed to do a square a month. By my own challenge terms, that means 7 squares a month! Probably pretty doable, as long as "life" doesn't interfere too much! First things first, though. Have to prep the ties, and then cut the squares. Getting closer to doing that, which means I'm definitely going to have to make a decision about size. Leaning towards 8" but also thinking of cutting the squares at 10.5" to allow some leeway in case I decide to add sashing.

Oh well, I did take the process pledge, didn't I? So I'm documenting the process for you while noodling my way through the decisions.

You really want to click on this picture to see a bigger version! It's a quilted version of one of the old "feather trees" that were so popular many many years ago. This one is decorated with mostly old buttons, including a few (like the blue lovebirds) that I remember from my grandmother's button box.

There's a second one of these trees, which looks nearly identical, but it's done with brighter colors (in the plaid border) and much more contemporary buttons--airplanes, and gummy bears, and the like.

They'll be coming down soon. Not sure what I'll put up in their places, since I don't have many quilts this size. Guess I need to go look around!

A Watched Pot

...produces dinner. Raviolis with portobello mushroom filling, marinara with meatballs--dinner out of the fridge and freezer. The meatballs and ravioli were frozen, from Trader Joe's, and the marinara--also from TJ's--had been opened to make English-muffin pizzas. I like to simmer the meatballs in the sauce while the pasta is cooking. There's enough left for another meal, too.

Not only did this dinner taste good, but it helped make a little room in the freezer. Currently there is an inordinate amount of turkey broth in the freezer, most of it in smallish single-recipe size containers. I froze the leftover turkey, dressing, and even the mashed potatoes, too. When it's too good to toss, but too much to eat, what else is there to do? If winter ever comes to these parts, there may be some nights when a little soup, or a hot turkey sammich, will make a good meal!

Mmmm! Can you almost smell the luscious aroma of cinnamon, nutmeg, brown sugar and pecans topping this decadent pan of baked French toast? Caitlin made this for Christmas breakfast--served it with warm maple syrup that was infused with vanilla bean.

Last Day of the Year

What could be more appropriate for an end-of-the-year post than a photo with my Chinese Zodiac animal? Yes, I am a snake--as are two of my daughters, the ones known on my blog as D1 and D5. Ring out the old year, ring in the new one.

This hasn't been a successful year for my photo blogging ambitions. Kind of hard to take and post pictures when one is flat on her back. However, the back surgery is now behind me (snerk) and I am trying very hard to get back to normal--or more appropriately, get to the new normal.

So, in the spirit of new beginnings, I'm going to declare that for 2012 I will try to post a photo every day. I'm going to allow myself the leeway to maybe post a day or two after the fact, depending on what's going on in my life, but by this time next year (assuming the Mayas just ran out of room for their calculations) there should be 366 pictures on this blog.

I've signed up for a couple of challenges for the year--one is called Take a Stitch Tuesday, and the other is a crazy quilt block challenge. I'll probably post pictures here as well as on my "other blog" but the details will be over there. I reserve the right to make this blog about whatever comes in front of my lens, whether it's my cats, my kids, my grandkids, my flowers, my trees, the skies, clouds, quilts, knitty stuff.

So, for now? Here's wishing you a happy new year, and I'll see you tomorrow!

My Valentine quilt, out for its annual airing. And yes, it's supposed to look like that--the idea was to replicate an old love note that's been folded and refolded.

There are love quotes written in the corners. This was made around 1990 or 1991, hand appliqued and hand quilted.

...are a bit difficult to photograph, especially when the sun is turning the house next door the same color!

Most of the white varieties bloom at this time of year, which means that by Camellia Festival time (last weekend in Feb.) it's practically impossible to find the white ones for float decorating. This bush will be long past its prime by then!

I made two just like this. Actually this is the "back" side of the quilt--raggs typically get snipped and then washed and dried several times to fluff up the fringes, hence "rag" quilt. Because each block is two pieces of fabric with batting in between, and the seams are over an inch wide, it doesn't lay flat at this stage.

Stay tuned for the next exciting installment--after I get my house, myself, and my cats thoroughly covered in threads and lint during the snipping process. Still not quite sure if I want to wash and dry them at home, or in a commercial washer.

I do have to say I'm rather pleased with the layout of these blocks, considering what I had to work with in the way of colors and patterns!

Finally cranked up my "personal pie" baker tonight and made four little cranberry-apple tarts. Really ambitious project: of course, the baker did have to be seasoned...but the pie crust was ready-made, the pie filling came in a jar from Trader Joe's (thanks for the yummies, Aaron!), so the work involved was minimal.

And now I have a hot pie to enjoy. Excuse me...

Tonight's sunset was absolutely spectacular. This was the best I could do while driving home--although the traffic almost stopped a couple of times, I had to "point and shoot" and not look!

One of those times w hen the 30-mile drive home has entertainment provided, thanks to the changing colors and the strange cloud formations. These clouds really did center on the setting sun. Odd, and oddly beautiful, too!

In the process of cutting the strips down into 2-patches. Total yield? 300! They'll make 150 4-patches and 32 (I think!) 16-patches.

Taking big pieces of fabric, cutting them up into little pieces, and then sewing them back together into big pieces. The essence of quiltmaking!

This picture evokes a phrase from an old country song that has haunted me for years:

"faded love and winter roses"

Don't remember who sang it, or even what came next. But the winter-stricken rosebushes, with a few brave blossoms hanging on and some scarlet rosehips leavening the desolation, tell the story. And the seedling Chinese elm tree reaching over the bushes?

Well, it's doomed. One way or another, it's out of there. My love for it faded before it ever grew this tall!

So starting the year off with this lovely camellia, which is currently blooming just outside my back door. This is the bush that the deck was built around, and I'm so very glad we saved it!

The colors in the sun were just glowing. I had caught myself wondering why the trees everywhere seemed to be brighter colors suddenly--couldn't just be that I had washed my windshield!

Then I realized we'd had a couple of nights of frost--and the old East-Coast knowledge that frost brings out the best color kicked in.

This is an example of SoCal weather playing with our minds. I was out at Daughter's today and the rain came down by the bucketful. Thunder, lightning, even a little bit of hail.

Got back home and everything is bone-dry. Now I get to spend the weekend moving hoses around to try to get some water on the parched plants. Would it have hurt to have given us just a little bit of rain here?

Mission San Juan Capistrano has the bells displayed next to the ruins of the stone church. Quotes:

The original bells were hung from a large nearby tree for some fifteen years, until the chapel bell tower was completed in 1791. What ultimately became of the original bells is not known. New bells were cast in Chile for inclusion in the belfry of "The Great Stone Church." All four of Mission San Juan Capistrano's bells are named and all bear inscriptions as follows (from the largest to the smallest; inscriptions are translated from Latin):[114]

I love the practice of naming bells--and one of my all-time favorite books is Dorothy Sayers' The Nine Tailors.

Or is it just a morning glory? Hard to tell, but these are so pale and pretty I'm enjoying them! Planted a bunch of really old seeds in a couple of pots--well, the whole potful was really old seeds. And they grew!

My black thumb is feeling a little less black and bleak now.

We do not get this kind of clover in Calif. It was good to see it again! When I was little, we would knot the long supple stems together to make chaplets for our hair! (They always fell apart, but the fun was in the making!)
